The Rochester Recreation Department is seeking energetic and enthusiastic individuals to fill a variety of seasonal positions for its summer programs. Opportunities include roles at summer camps and outdoor pools, with competitive pay and free lifeguard certification training for eligible candidates.
Available Positions
Summer Camp Directors
Camp Directors oversee, plan, coordinate, and supervise activities for school-aged children. Responsibilities include:
- Supervising and providing feedback to Head Camp Counselors and Counselors
- Overseeing the implementation of the daily schedule of activities
- Strategizing creative solutions for behavioral challenges
- Communicating with parents/guardians
Position Available: June–August
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
Pay: $17.75–$23.00 per hour (based on experience)
Summer Camp Counselors & Head Counselors
Summer Camp Counselors plan and facilitate a variety of indoor and outdoor activities for school-aged children during the summer day camp program. Responsibilities include:
- Establishing and maintaining a routine of active and passive recreation activities
- Engaging campers mentally, physically, and socially
- Maintaining a fun and safe environment that encourages campers to return each day
- No evening or weekend shifts required
Head Counselors supervise Camp Counselors and oversee the Counselor-In-Training Program.
Position Available: June–August
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
Pay: $13.00–$17.00 per hour (based on experience)
Outdoor Pool Lifeguards & Head Lifeguards
Lifeguards are responsible for:
- Ensuring the safe operation of the aquatic facility
- Enforcing pool rules and maintaining positive public relationships
- Implementing a daily schedule of activities, including swim lessons and public swim times
Head Lifeguards supervise lifeguards and oversee swim lessons.
Candidates must have a current lifeguard certification or the ability to take the Rochester Recreation Lifeguard course.
Position Available: June–August
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
Pay: $15.75–$23.00 per hour (based on experience)
Free lifeguard certification training available for eligible candidates
Outdoor Pool Attendants
Pool Attendants handle non-lifeguard-related duties to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the aquatic facility. Responsibilities include:
- Signing in participants
- Serving as the onsite department liaison to the public
- Helping maintain positive public relationships at all aquatic facilities
Position Available: June–August
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
Pay: $13.00–$15.00 per hour (based on experience)
Requirements for All Positions
- Must be at least 15 years of age (18+ for Camp Directors)
- Valid certification in First Aid/CPR/AED (or ability to obtain certification)
- High energy level and effective communication skills
- Pre-employment testing for applicants 18+ includes a criminal record check and drug screening
