In this episode of the Rochester NH History Podcast, learn about the first person to ride a bicycle down Mount Washington—E. H. Corson of Rochester.
In 1883, Corson fearlessly navigated the mountain’s 7.5-mile-long carriage road, a narrow, winding path just 16 feet wide, featuring 99 curves and a 4,000-foot drop. Riding a Star Bike, known for its towering height and inherent dangers, Corson completed this daring feat with only a simple hand brake—and without the benefit of helmets or modern safety gear.
