First Church Congregational Announces the Passing of Longtime Church Secretary Linda Maynard

Dec 11, 2024

First Church Congregational, UCC, Rochester, has announced the unexpected passing of Linda Maynard, who served as the church’s secretary for over 40 years. Maynard passed away on Sunday following a sudden illness.

Linda Maynard was a pillar of the church community, providing steadfast leadership and support, especially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. A cancer survivor since age 40, Maynard often referred to her post-80 years as her “third lifetime,” believing she had been given additional time to make a difference. Her compassion led her to found the church’s food pantry, which became a cornerstone of her ministry and a testament to her belief that no one should go hungry.

Known for her extraordinary energy and commitment, Maynard worked more than 30 hours per week even at the age of 81. She volunteered regularly at Rochester’s Fellowship Kitchen and played an active role in community events such as the annual Christmas Parade, pancake breakfasts, and the Blueberry Fest.

Her passing leaves a profound void within the church and the wider community. The congregation remembers her as a powerhouse of vitality, creativity, and service, whose impact will be felt for generations to come.

A funeral service for Linda Maynard will take place at Edgerly’s Funeral Home on Saturday, December 14. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by the service at 12 p.m., led by Rev. Donna Muise. All are welcome to attend.

A Celebration of Life honoring Maynard is planned for February at First Church UCC, Rochester. Further details will be announced at a later date.
